No not at all. We would be delighted to see you. Many of our new consultations come to us after recommendation from previously treated patients. Should you decide to go ahead with treatment, we would work closely with your dentist.
After a brief chat about your wishes we’ll take a series of photographs, and possibly x-rays. We will then talk through your options for treatment to give you the smile you are looking for, including how long your treatment will take, and what the financial investment will be. Occasionally, for more complex treatments, a second visit is needed to finalise your treatment options.
A removable brace is fitted very easily by clipping it onto selected teeth. There is no discomfort involved. Fixed braces are simply “glued” onto the teeth. There is no need for an anaesthetic injection.
It is recommended that your child be evaluated around age seven. The early detection of certain orthodontic problems is important to enable corrective action and therefore avoid more complex treatment later.
No, age is not a factor, only the health of your gums and bone, which support your teeth. About one third of our orthodontic patients are adults and that number is still growing!
Very crunchy and sticky foods can break your brace. Toffee and chewing gum must be avoided. Really enjoyable hard foods can be chopped up and chewed gently.
Fixed braces – these are usually bonded to the tooth surface. These can be metal or tooth coloured. Lingual fixed braces – these are mounted behind the patients teeth but are only available in selected cases. Invisible braces – used for selected adult cases and for children who are excellent in managing their oral hygiene. Removable – this type of brace can be taken out.
This depends on how much work there is to do. Fixed brace treatment can take between 12 and 24 months, but longer if the problem is particularly severe. If braces are broken frequently this can prolong the treatment time.

Aftercare
Jane provides supervised retention for 1 year after orthodontic treatment.
At the completion of all treatment the stability will be dependent on compliance with wear of retainers. The stability of the result varies between individuals and is not always predictable. The alignment of the lower front teeth is known to be unstable due to facial maturation. Therefore long term retention is recommended for all cases to minimise unwanted tooth movement.
Why wear retainers?
After the braces are removed, the bone and gums around the roots of the teeth are still ‘soft’. Teeth can move out of line within days, if they are not held with a retainer. If you do not wear your retainers as advised, you risk losing the alignment of your teeth, this is called a ‘relapse’. If teeth move out of line and your retainers do not fit, then the only way to straighten them again is to repeat orthodontic treatment incurring extra charges. Relapse is disappointing for us both!
